Case #4001

Submental Liposuction

Dr. Beina Azadgoli · Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon

This 22-year-old female was concerned about persistent, stubborn submental fullness (commonly known as “double chin”). Dr. Azadgoli performed chin liposuction to carefully sculpt and reduce the excess fat beneath her chin. Here she is 6 months postoperatively.

Pre-op preparation

What to do before surgery. Specific to this case.

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil discontinued 14 days pre-op to reduce bruising risk. Acetaminophen is allowed.
  • Full nicotine cessation 6 weeks pre- and post-op. This includes vapes and nicotine replacement products; the constriction effect is the same.
  • Set up an elevated sleeping arrangement — extra pillows or a wedge — to keep the head above the heart for the first week. Stock soft, low-sodium foods.
  • Confirm a driver for surgery day and a companion who can stay through the first night.

Recovery timeline

Milestones specific to this case. Individual recovery varies.

  1. Day 1–7

Cold compresses, head elevated, low-talking the first 72 hours. Most bruising peaks at day 3 and starts to soften by day 5.

  2. Week 2

Stitches removed, residual bruising fading, social comfort returns. No lifting, no straining, no exercise yet.

  3. Week 4

Residual swelling continues to refine. Most patients return to normal social and work life; light cardio begins.

  4. Week 6

Most physical restrictions lift. Return to strength training, full-impact cardio, and overhead lifting.

  5. Month 3

The "before/after" shape most people associate with the procedure shows itself in this window.
